We loved this cosy, gorgeous house. This is our 5th Rural Retreats booking and was definitely the best presented and had the best hamper! CML, Windsor

Cliff Cottage is the original brick cottage of Gurnard village and is situated 60 metres from the water's edge, the beach and the island's coastal path, with an easy 2k walk along the sea front to the world famous sailing town of Cowes.

The cottage is in classic early 19th century style, detached and double fronted with a delightful kitchen garden and two additional 'secret' gardens, a summerhouse, sun terrace with outside eating patio and barbecue. The cottage has recently been fully refurbished to a high standard with all new fixtures and furniture.

Gurnard village is a very desirable location on the island and home to the island's best pub, the Woodvale, as well as the Watersedge Cafe and a dinghy sailing club. It is only a short walk to the playground, local shop, cash point, newsagent and the Little Gloster restaurant. Cowes is home to many individually styled shops, a fishmonger, butcher, artisan bakery and wine shop. In all, everything you could possibly need for a perfect getaway.

The Isle of Wight is easily accessible from the mainland from various points including Lymington, Southampton and Portsmouth.

The island has everything from beautiful hills and downs to walk or cycle, coastal paths to explore, every type of watersport possible, bike and horse trails, woodland and forests and of course beautiful beaches and bays around its Jurassic Coast.

For the grown-ups, the island boasts award-winning vineyards, a cider barn, a lavender farm, crab shacks plus the famous Garlic Farm and Minghella's ice cream!

West Winnowing details

Situated in the peaceful village of Niton, ten miles from the seaside town of Ventnor, this property, dating back to the mid 1800s, enjoys spectacular views over the island's southern coastline at St Catherine's Point. West Winnowing enjoys spectacular sea views.

Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with coastal and cliff-top walks, horse riding, cycling, pottery painting, surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing and bird watching are available in the area. St Catherine's Lighthouse can be seen from the decked area.

The house is within easy walking distance of a real ale pub, the Buddle Inn which dates back to the 17th century, serves food and welcomes families.

The village of Niton, a five to ten minute walk, has a chemist, post office/tea room, church, additional pub and a small well stocked grocery store. The village of Niton has historical links with Guglielmo Marconi who used the local Knowles Farm as a location for radio experiments when he was living on the Isle of Wight in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

The rocky coastline is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from the cottage but there are plenty of pebble or sandy beaches within easy driving distance. There are more than 20 beaches around the island including several which are award winning.

Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Osborne House, Amazon World and Carisbrooke Castle are some of the island's most popular attractions.

Approximate travelling times - 1.5 to two hours from London to Lymington Ferry Port or Portsmouth Ferry Port - 30 minute ferry crossing, 30 minute drive from Yarmouth or 35 minutes form Fishbourne to Niton village.

Oak Cliff Place is a magnificent Victorian detached house, wonderfully private with stunning uninterrupted views over the Solent to Portsmouth. Light-filled, high-ceilinged and spacious, it is set in an elevated position within five acres of land including its own small wood and steeply sloping secluded path through its grounds down to a pebble beach. To the west are walks along the shore to sandy beaches and a nature reserve; to the east is Wootton Creek, filled with yachts and smaller boats.

There is a large stone terrace to the rear of the property overlooking the garden and sea beyond, with gas barbecue and two wooden dining tables seating 16. The extensive grounds also include an asphalt tennis court, a fenced and heated (from 1st May to 30th September) outdoor swimming pool with pool house, outdoor table tennis, ground-sunk trampoline, football pitch and several lawns. The garden drops to an unfenced, uncultivated, wild flowered steep slope down to the sea, so caution is needed with young children.

Inside, six of the eight bedrooms have full sea views. The large kitchen/dining room opens through French doors to the terrace for easy outside dining and fabulous sea views and the games room provides a pool table and TV for indoor entertainment. There is an additional TV snug with a 42" wall mounted flat screen TV. The large drawing room and adjoining conservatory provide a peaceful setting for enjoying the wonderful coastal outlook, with an open fire for cooler evenings.

It is a 30 minute scenic walk along Wootton Creek - or a few minutes' drive - to a well stocked Tesco Express on Wootton Bridge, Majestic Wines and the headquarters of the delicious Isle of Wight Minghella Ice Creams. The popular local fish and chip shop opposite provides a quick and easy alternative supper. Five to ten minutes' drive further on is Briddlesford Lodge, Wootton, with its farm shop and Bluebell Caf, open daily for a large selection of local and organic produce including hand- made sausages and other meat from the on-site butcher.

There are miles of beautiful sandy beaches at Ryde, a picturesque Victorian seaside town 4.5 miles away, and at Sandown beach, 11 miles from the property. Oak Cliff Place is situated midway between Ryde and the world-famous yachting centre, Cowes, full of old time charm. Within 30 minutes' drive are the sailing towns of Seaview and Bembridge on the east coast, Yarmouth on the west and Ventnor and St Lawrence to the south, all with delightful pubs serving local seafood and other produce. All around are the miles of footpaths, unspoilt scenery and stunning coastline which make for a perfect walking/cycling/riding holiday or family break.

DAMAGE DEPOSIT: There is a damage waiver deposit scheme for all bookings. A cheque or cash for the sum of five hundred pounds is to be given to the owner on arrival to facilitate access to the property.

With superb views over Newtown Creek and the Solent in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Myrtle Cottage is a beautifully presented and refurbished cottage, standing as one of a pair with its own enclosed garden.

Newtown was established in the 13th century as a centre of trade and shipping, and the capital of the Isle of Wight, and subsequently become a 'rotten borough'. Its medieval town hall is of archaeological importance. There is lots to do around this wonderful part of the Isle of Wight. Yarmouth is a lovely historic sailing town, with a square with pubs and restaurants serving great food.

There are many scenic walks around the Newtown Creek, which has a bird hide to observe the area's wildfowl and other wildlife.

There are many bays, coves, beaches and picturesque villages with tearooms as well as tourist attractions including The Needles Park (with chairlifts, boat rides, coloured sands, lighthouse, amusements and glassmaking). Also within easy driving distance are Chesil Pottery, Calbourne Water Mill, Tennyson Down with its spectacular views, Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House and Cowes Harbour. The nearest sandy beach is a 10-15 minute drive from the cottage and the nearest pub is the New Inn at Shalfleet, about 1.5 miles away (known to be one of the best pubs on the island).
