In association with Trinity House, Rural Retreats is pleased to present Beacon Cottage at Start Point Lighthouse.
Beacon (with accommodation for 6 guests) is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse and is a detached property perched on the cliff edge, a location that offers a simply breathtaking panorama of sea views to the south and west and across Start Bay to the east.
The lighthouse lies on a dramatic headland above Start Bay in the South Hams, between Dartmouth and Salcombe and was built in 1863, electrified in 1959 and automated in 1993. Start Point lies 4 miles from the main road via narrow country lanes. The final stretch is a half-mile private, walled, tarmac drive which runs along the side of the headland. The drive is shared with walkers, forming part of the South West Coast Path. Guests can use the path to enjoy breathtaking clifftop walks in both directions. For sandy beaches, East Portlemouth, Slapton and Blackpool Sands are within a 20-minute drive of the lighthouse.
Guests should note that, as well as walkers passing by the cottage on the coastal path, the lighthouse is open (subject to availability) to visitors from 10am-5pm Easter to October. You are also reminded that Start Point Lighthouse is an operational lighthouse and there is an electronic fog signal that operates automatically (ear plugs are provided in case conditions are misty).

Access roads to some of the lighthouse sites are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.
Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.

In association with Trinity House, Rural Retreats is pleased to present Verity Cottage at Trevose Head Lighthouse.
Verity (with accommodation for four guests) is one of four holiday cottages available at the lighthouse which is located on a headland between the sandy beaches of Harlyn and Constantine Bays, four miles west of Padstow. The Lighthouse was built in 1847, electrified in 1973 and automated in 1995. The site is not open to the public and the four cottages are sheltered beneath a headland and are 75' above the sea, accessed via a one-mile-long private road. Fine views out to sea and the chance to watch fishing boats coming in and out of Padstow.
The cottages are semi-detached, with the lighthouse positioned in the middle. At the front, there is a communal tarmac forecourt with parking. To the rear, on the sea side, there is a shared, walled, grass area which is fenced at the cliff edge. (In the interest of safety, it is recommended that guests do not use this space). The South West Coast path runs round the headland and on towards Padstow.

Accommodation overview: Situated in the upper part of Devon Road, some 10/15 minutes walk from the town centre and North Sands beach, Sunnyledge and Burberry are two adjoining halves of one large traditional town house - each has been extensively and tastefully upgraded to a modern standard over recent seasons. The layout of each house effectively mirrors the other with all accommodation on two levels (via separate stone steps up to 1st floor entrances) with each property enjoying lovely views cross the estuary through an area of protected woodland. Whilst Sunnyledge and Burberry are essentially individual properties with private access and accommodation they also offer opportunities for two families seeking adjacent properties of an equivalent, high standard.
